Full Stack Developer (Mid-level and up)

What the work actually is

We build for organisations that already have systems, and those systems cannot stop. The case studies on this site are a fair picture of the shape of it.

• Build both ends — Next.js, NestJS or Express on TypeScript, against PostgreSQL or SQL Server.
• Wire our systems into the client's: SAP, ERP, accounting, commerce, and identity providers like Keycloak, Entra ID or Cognito.
• Migrate off legacy systems while the old thing keeps working — several thousand QR stickers already fixed to walls nationwide had to scan into the new system with nothing reprinted.
• Ship to production that is sometimes the client's own Kubernetes rather than ours, and has to clear their security standards.
• Read documentation for systems you did not write and work out where the truth actually is. This takes as long as writing code and it is what decides whether a project survives.
• Talk to clients directly — both to gather what they need and to tell them when what they asked for will cause a problem later.

Who fits

• Three years or more building web applications, including looking after something after it shipped rather than handing it over.
• Solid TypeScript and React or Next.js, and able to write the API behind it yourself.
• Comfortable in SQL, and able to say why a query is slow.
• Has integrated against somebody else's API with incomplete docs and got it working anyway.
• Can explain a technical trade-off to someone who is not technical.

What would set you apart

• Worked with SAP, ERP or corporate accounting systems.
• Understands OAuth/OIDC well enough to debug it when it breaks, not only to use it when it works.
• Docker and Kubernetes in anger.
• Built something that talks to hardware — QR readers, sensors, kiosks.

Worth knowing before you apply

The constraint here is almost always somebody else's system. You will not pick the newest technology every time, and the most elegant solution will often be unavailable for reasons that have nothing to do with code. If that sounds maddening, this is not the job. If it sounds like the interesting part, we would like to talk.

• Hardware and software people in the same room, so you can ask across the divide.
• A budget for learning and for certifications relevant to the work.
